Not necessarily incompetent. Just lacking some critical piece of knowledge, or he may not have been the type of person who is good at solving riddles. Some people have a natural aptitude for such things, and some don't. In the 119 years since his death, NOBODY have been proven to have found the Lost Dutchman. There have been some very bright minds that have made the attempt.

The Ludlum Model 4404-16 Geo-Exploration System provides radiation surface measurements to help discern the underlying geology.
