I tend to agree with that statement (the straight as an arrow one). I believe that most of the authors of these stories think that their versions
are correct. This is born out by the fact that many have followed their own clues.

I do think however, that at least 2 writers might have intentionally misled folks or did not do much "homework" before publishing (though, honestly, I really lean towards the first, rather than the second possibility).
