If you come into Rough Canyon by skirting the bottom of Cimmeron Mountain. . well part way up , because the bottom of the canyon really is to rough. . the rock is extremely loose and very difficult footing, but passable; the point I was going to make is that there is geode type material and not all round either. found some with amethyst crystals inside. Keep on going and maybe 1/2 mile or so, you'll get to the big cave and just past that is a pretty good sized waterfall. Beautiful area.

There is a cave dwelling directly across from the goal posts in Rough Canyon

Maybe we didn’t go far enough up Rough canyon?
I am not familiar with the “goal posts” you mention.
It was late 1970’s when I was there, and only went to that area the one time.

What are the goal posts, and how far up the canyon are they?

The big cave with a lot of artifacts, was not a cliff dwelling ruins, but people lived there.
This was many years ago, but seems like it was about 1/2 mile up Rough canyon, on the side of Cimmeron mnt.
I wonder when the goal posts were named, or became a thing. I don’t remember anything about them. I didn’t see any trail signs either.
We must not have gone up in far enough to the cliff dwellings.
I didn’t even know they were there ;)

Thanks for posting the link to the photos.

The caves with internal mud slides/flows, didn’t look safe to explore. They were located a crossed the canyon, on the south side. They also were the ones that smelled heavily of cat, and had pieces of pottery in the mud flows.
It was very lush when we were there. Lots of water.

393Stroker,
I listened to this audio. Im curious why you wanted us to listen to it?
Are you thinking of going after potential gold bars in the other drift?

393stroker,
It was very interesting to go and look at the list .... they look to be in sequence ....
it seems similar to the path in Holmes manuscript, yet it is different.
It definitely is different from Julia?s southern path.

So really, we have 3 sets of directions ... each supposedly given in sequence.
Play time :)
I?m hoping to find a cross link between this and the other two sets of directions.
Any bets?
Probably nothing, but I was going to check for water sources, headed north from where I think Waltz’s uplift is.

If this was from a letter to a relative, it sure doesn’t have much for details if meant to actually be directions.
It sounds like maybe it was a best effort to piece together directions from the north, since no luck with the southern route.
Also thinking that there probably wasn’t much sharing of info going on.

So, went and looked at the German clue list/path.
Says the water source is 3 kilometers from the spire/uplift.
There is a water source right at about 3 kilometers from that uplift.
It would not be a fun hike :), but Waltz is actually just giving a distance, not necessarily a trail length.
I was not able to see the Indian trails that come and go from various water sources, but perhaps it was a well known Indian trail, back in the day.
I?m tired, looked a long time :BangHead:
It was good to at least find a water source, not that it means much ... :tongue3:

Forgot to mention, the water source, looks to be in line for coming in from the north :)

No, was talking about one of the German clues. You had posted a link for it earlier in this thread. It is still an active link. I figured we could move on from talking about the goal posts :)
Maybe get back to LDM clues :laughing7:

Frog Spring is about 3 clicks from a spire. Rough Canyon is in between.
