Hello Greg,

At the time of the writing of Ely's book in 1952-1953, John Willey was the treasurer and financial officer of Wm. Morrow and Company in New York. Treasurer was his only job.
Willey's job was to oversee the process of getting Ely's book to print.
Willey was not a writer, in fact he never wrote anything in the entire time he worked for Wm. Morrow Co.
He became the Managing editor in 1957, he ran the company but still never wrote anything.

Edith Mirrieless was the personal secretary for Bruce Bliven at Stanford and she was on the English faculty at Stanford as well.
Ms. Mirrieless worked with Bruce Bliven as secretary and editor on numerous writing projects which involved personal manuscripts.

Both Bruce Bliven and Edith Mirrieless were personal friends of Sims Ely.

Best,

Matthew

Author, writer and editor Bruce Bliven.

Can you expound on this? Is there a paper trail that follows back to Mr. Bliven?

Cubfan64,

From Bruce Bliven Sr.'s biography:

Bliven would work 7 days a week 11 months of the year and from 1950 on he devoted all his time to writing books and manuscripts.
From 1940 - 1968 Bliven would take home a brief case full of submitted manuscripts 5 nights a week.
Bliven was also a writer for the New York Globe, The New Republic and New Yorker magazine as well as several other major publications.
Bliven received high reviews for many of his books and was known for his fresh, often unexpected approach to writing.

Yes, Bruce Bliven's life and work is well documented.

Best,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for the response but I was looking more for a paper trail that documented his being the person who put together Ely's book from his notes/manuscript? Not implying it isn't true, just that there must be a paper trail of evidence that leads to that conclusion no?

Hello Paul and Matthew: If William Morrow and Company is still in existence they may have those records or they may be with the writer if he is still around. Cordially, Gregory E. Davis

Hello Greg,

It took quite a while to track things down, almost gave up a time or two, in the process found that William Morrow and Co. no longer exists as Wm. Morrow and Co., but through sales, mergers and acquisitions today is a part of the conglomerate News Corp. the largest publisher of books and magazines in the world. Harper-Collins, a subsidiary of News Corp, is today the parent company of the former Wm. Morrow and Company. News Corp. Harper-Collins retains all the imprint records of all the books acquired through a series of mergers and acquisitions, including the complete records of Wm. Morrow and Company. Harper-Collins still retains certain printing rights to Sims Ely’s book. News Corp. Harper-Collins is located on 10 E. 53rd Street in New York City, they also have an office in Los Angeles.

Best,

Matthew

Thank you Matthew: That was a great piece of detective work on your part. This should help Paul with his research if he decides to pursue the project. Cordially, Gregory E. Davis
