How can I find a lost gold ring in my yard

So my daughter got a small gold ring for her 18th birthday. And being the child she still is she gets out in the snow in our front yard when a friend stopped by to bring a present and engages in a snowball fight. And yes, it's cold, the ring slips off the finger and is somewhere in the lawn. Mom is upset, my daughter devastated. So, it's less about the value of the ring to be honest. My daughter takes these things really seriously. Any chance to find the ring ? It's a small ring, 750 yellow gold, in an area of 1000sqft, maybe 2000sqft max. Anyone can give some advice ? Can I rent or borrow a detector? What model would I need? I am located in Loveland, Ohio. Should I search now or wait until spring ? I have never used a metal detector. What are our chances.

Go to The Ringfinders website and find someone in your area who will find it for you. If you have a lot of snow you might have to wait for spring. The best of detectors will only see that size and composition ring at 8” or so. If she was wearing gloves at some point, look IN the glove.

There's another site which will help find it and it's totally free. You might get lucky and a member lives relatively close.

Should be an easy find, don't worry - But with a snowball fight, could be yards away from where expected, even in another yard if she was close to a neighbors fence.
BTW, everyone takes the loss of gold jewelry seriously, very depressing - Which is why most of us return items when able.
Short of metal detecting, you could use a propane flame blaster and blast the snow/ice away for a possibly easy eyeball find.

I would 2nd calling Douglas - He just found a wedding ring last week for someone in your area - How cool is that! He should know that that small a ring is going to require very low discrimination and he is likely looking for a low vdi number. He looks like he hunts with the AT Pro so he is looking for something in the 38-45 vdi range.

However if your set on finding it yourself I would recommend you look at a Nokta Simplex or Minelab Vanquish to affordable entry-level machines that get the job done. Unfortunately Tiny Gold rings sound and show similar vdi numbers as foil so at a park for example you have to dig a lot of trash. In your own yard maybe not so much but you would have to check any solid low vdi numbers. This is something that gets easier with a few years of detecting under you belt. Myself I would either ignore all other high tones (vdi #'s) or I would notch everything else out and do a quick pass of the whole yard 1st and hope I get lucky.

I would also recommend you take a few pictures of the snow tracks in the yard for future reference- we have plenty of more snow on the way and it may help.

I'd have someone with detecting experience do the search. A member of theringfinders.com would be my recommendation too. If your yard has been in use for decades, there will be lots of signals in the small gold ring range. That can be very frustrating to a newbie. If it's a new property without much human activity (hence trash), sure, spend money on a detector and give it a try. Chances are, you'll end up having to ask a pro to do it anyway.

He is a really nice person, came this afternoon - yes, that is right - before the snow is going to set in, searched for an hour or so and handed the ring over to my daughter. With a slight smile, "is this the ring you are looking for"? He is an awesome person. Thanks to everyone for helping us.

Long ago a fellow asked me to help him find a ring her girlfriend lost...He offered me whatever I wanted if I managed to find it...I really did not expect anything....because when you do not expect anything, you will not be disappointed....Still, after more than hour of searching in the heat of the day I found the ring...The fellow did not give me anything, not even a glass of water...That was in Chattanooga.

I've had that happen returning keys or a phone, but, not a ring......in fact, I've had people get upset if I DIDN'T take a reward, so, I just let them give whatever they want. If they're happy, I'm happy.

Snow doesnt affect metal detectors. Doesnt hurt the coils or anything.
My wife dropped her pistol one day while we were skiing and we found it with the detector. The snow was mid thigh deep.
