Here is a Partial list of Mtn Passes through the Appalachian Mtns. Va. . Most have major St/U.S Route's through them.
Most of them probably followed old buffalo/wildlife migration trails through them in Swift days. The bottom link is the page if ya want to check out all of them.

That's interesting Reb, I have some first cousin Bowling's - but haven't heard from them in years. They married the Turner side of my family.

Mountain Lake is a beautiful place. Seems I remember when the lake drained a decade or so ago, they found a 1930's car with the remains of a person in it. Back in the 30's Mountain Lake was a mob hangout.

Yeah its a cool place.Walls are 2 to 3 ft. solid stone. We have stayed there a few times,They put on a great holiday weekend package. The stagecoach trail would be great to MD :)
And when "IT" hits the "FAN" would be a great holdout place for 50 +(well prepared LOL) people :) 066.JPG

From birth I have a dreadful fear of heights. The drive up that mountain to get to the hotel discouraged me from driving up often.

Someone please help me with the name of the gap that New River and Rt.460 goes through near Narrows Va. Please !! Not sure it would be considered a gap sense New River runs through it on it way from Upper Yadkin Valley to the Kanawha.

Looks like its just called the Narrows on this map. Zoom in and use the centering tool if you like.

Map says Hales Gap West of Glen Lyn, but that is in WVA not VA.

Hales gap is in W. Va. But Just N East maybe 10 mile or so you leave Mercer Co. W.Va. and enter Giles Co. Va. And if ya follow New river you pass through Ingles Ferry.

My last project before retiring was 3 years at Celco in Narrows, VA. I don't remember the 460 route there being called a "gap"

I don't understand your point? 460 does not seem to run that direction. It looks to run on along the New River in a general South and East direction if you look at the map link. You asked about a name of a gap...

Here is Giles Co./Montgomery Co. Line where 460 makes through a 'gap' but this is well East of Narrows.

My point is, water runs down hill . New River heads up in N Carolina, Near Yadkins Valley, it runs through Va., into W. Va where it joins with Gauley River to form the Kanawha River at Gauley Bridge. In Hensons book it gives days traveled by the route they traveled. The fastest/least number of days traveled was when they went from Sandy to New River and by Ingles Ferry on .to Yadkins Valley where Mundy lived.
