    A Book, Well Worth Reading...

"Among The Cotton Thieves" by Col Edward Bacon; 1830-1901; book published 1867

Experiences of the author as officer and later commander of the 6th Regiment, Michigan Volunteers, near New Orleans and at Port Hudson; sharply criticizing his commanding officers, Gen Thomas Williams and William Dwight, and Col T. S. Clark.

The reading includes actions around Port Hudson, all up and down the rivers in my area, the burning of the USS Barataria, very much well worth reading. The author has been jailed, court- martialed, demoted just for trying to tell the truth. Check to see if your local library has it, cause reading on line just might not be your thing.

Re: A Book, Well Worth Reading...

I read this awhile back online when you first told me about it. It gives some pretty good detail of what happened in Ponchatoula. I'm always intereted in what happened in our next of the woods during the war. Other than a couple pieces of buckshot, though, I haven't found much.
