I decided to hit one of our local long-unused fishing ponds yesterday. After 30 minutes of pulling up the usual jars of bait and spinners, I decided to drag my magnet underneath the dock in 8 feet of water. To my surprise, I pulled up rod and reel number 8 in just the last 60 days! It turned out to be a rare, 1980's vintage Shakespear 035 Series 2000 spin-caster, mated to a Fenwick Blackhawk 5'-3" graphite rod! After completely disassembling, cleaning and re-lubing the gears, it spins as smoothly as when it was new!

Nice catch, I pulled in a 5000 C level wind and custom casting rod the other day.

I didn't have much hope, because it looked like it had been down there for more than a little while! One thing can be said for old school reels: they're not cursed with alien-like technology! When I remove the side plate, I found that there were gears instead of bearings. It was a breeze to clean them up and simply apply new grease.

for an old reel that preserved nicely. makes me wonder how long it was down there. maybe some fish admired it also and kept polishing it up:tongue3:

That is a nice outfit now that you have cleaned it up and greased the reel. It looks perfectly usable. I use rods and reels and even lures that are much older and get a kick out of catching a fish on gear that is 50-60 years old.

I don't know if the terminology has changed - but that is a spinning reel, not a spin-cast reel. A spin-cast reel is a closed face push button reel.
