Maybe this will help. Are you looking as far west as Carthage and Newtonia?

Here's another one that has offical records and reports. Sorry no maps but good descriptions of who and where.

About a month ago,the editor of Benton County Enterprise, local Warsaw,MO newspaper, and our local historian,Homer May,just for the thrill of it tried to find and travel the Military Road from Warsaw to Cole Camp,MO.They were somewhat successful.Warsaw was burned three times during the CW.You can contact the Enterprise by: James White,editor,1-660-438-3464.He can put you in touch with Homer May.They are just plain country folk, like most of us here.Homer has been interested in all local history for a long time and has extensive knowledge of it.Goodluck.

    Warsaw,
Thanks for the info, I will give them a call. I have posted so much with little response, I guess a lot of people think that every one with a metal detector is a grave robber! I would never hunt a national battlefield, I am looking for campsites, places that troops camped, looking for stuff they left or lost, not wanting to damage anything or anyone, just love the history we have of the civil war, and then being able to prove and document area's they many people do not know they exist! If I can hook up with these guys, and locate any place you are welcome to join me.
    Thanks again for you help.

p.s. Today I have been reading on the Lone Jack battle, but I am not sure of how much of the troop movement area is covered under the area of the battlefield?

Re: Looking for western Missouri military road maps

There is a place just so. of Windsor that was known at that time as FT Lyons. It never was a real fort but just an encampment by an officer named Lyons.I haven't tried to locate it.My g'g'grandfather was wounded at lonejack and so was his horse. The national park there is just like most of them. They pretty well know where some of the hard fighting took place but do not know of all the other skirmishes around the area.Getting back to the Military Road from Warsaw to Cole Camp,I think it ran south and west to Oceola and over to FT Scott.
What area are you located in? I'm in Edwards, just north off of hwy 7(a little southeast of Warsaw).

Re: Looking for western Missouri military road maps

I live in central Missouri. I have a lot of the same problems. I know where some camps were, but the best parts are covered by concrete now.

The best place to look is in historical societies, not the libraries. They usually have something about the happenings during the civil war in the local area.

Not sure what you have found so far, but if you find fired mini balls you are really close. Look for a creek and hunt around that.
