Does anyone use NASA World Wind? It can be found here. http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/ It looks to me like it could be quite useful especially in the U.S. with it's high resolution maps and topographical maps. There are also a lot of add ons for it, found here. http://www.worldwindcentral.com/add-ons/list Like, Impact craters all over the world, and US Mineral Operations showing Ferrous and Nonferrous Metal Mines located in the United States, a couple of GPS tracking tools, You can even make your own add ons to map out your favorite Hunt spots. and the people in their forums are good people willing to help. Some might even do an addon for you like one for ghost towns or ship wrecks (I think I saw where someone was already making one for Great Lakes ship wrecks). The forums can be found here. http://forum.worldwindcentral.com/

I use World Wind.

Thanks for the add ons. Wish they had a Infrared color and B/W add on.

World Wind is a great program. Some people say it is slow, but it sure works for me.

I would suggest joining their forum and getting to know some ppl. There is a lot of talent there and with a little push some will get inspired to make or help make just what you are looking for. I live in Michigan and quite often visit my grandfathers old farm in Tennessee using world wind. I haven't been down there in years, my Aunt and Uncle own it now but they are in Florida alot of the time. I would love to do some MD'ing there and hope to soon. I can see many uses for World Wind like overlaying old maps over the high res and adjusting the transpearancy to view new landmarks compared to old or changes in rivers and such.
