    gov't GIS sites

Even though I can't detect on county property, they do have a pretty cool feature on their website. I'll give them credit (very little) for that. I found arial photography of the entire county from different years dating back to 1938. The website allows you to zoom in pretty close (I was able to pick out detail on my house) and switch between years that photos were taken without having to relocate your last view. I started at 2005, then to 2000 before I bought my house, then back to 1938....when it was just a farm field.
I scrolled around a little with the 2005 and 2000 views and if I found something that looked like it could have been a foundation or any kind of settlement, I switched to the 1938 view to see what could have been there. Pretty much like looking at older city maps that you don't have to buy or wait for mailing.
Right now I am, but before I was even more...or less.

keep in mind...this is just for my county. I'm not sure how many other counties have this.

Wow. Great tool for research. I wish my county had a map setup like that.

    Use it well!

GIS stands for "geographic information systems"

I haven't been over to the bridge site, yet. But, since it's a state run highway project and I work for the DOT, I might be able to get in there and swing coil for a while without any problem. I know...a little abuse of power, but I think I'll still be able to sleep at night. Time has been pretty tight in the last few weeks, but I do want to get out there at some point.
