    Old Boy/Girl Scout camps

I remember hearing about a couple of Scout camps being sold to the public when I was younger. I also remember driving by a Boy Scout camp when me and my dad used to go hunting... then a couple years later it was gone and new houses were built there. Anyone know of some old maps that show the old camps? Every search I do turns up just the camps open today.

I'm not sure about what area you are looking for, however, in NJ there is the former Schiff National Boy Scout Training Center. I think the website is www.schiffscoutpreserve.com but if thats not it use your search engine to gather more info. I hope this helps.

    Re: Old Boy/Girl Scout camps

I'm looking for old closed Boy/Girl Scout camps in WNY. I've Googled and have found open camps. I found someone I work with that remembers the old camp I was talking about. Turns out it was a Girl Scout camp which is privately owned now. All the small cabins were destroyed and the main lodge turned into a house. It wasn't a big camp, maybe only 10-20 small cabins. Thanks for the info and the tip.

Here's a link to camps in NY. It would help if you narrowed it down by county. If the link doesn't work copy and paste

Cool link. These seem to be existing camps, right? I'm really looking for closed camps, and camps sold to the public. Like I said I know where one is but I'd like to find others. I know when I was a scout there seemed to be camps all over the place. Now there's a handful around here(WNY Erie county).

    Re: Old Boy/Girl Scout camps

If I were you, I wouldn't ignore the more current scout camps! A fellow TNET'r found a boy scout camp that has 900 acres near Williamsburg. She did ALOT of research and we (our newfound club) have sole metal detecting rights to the property. The camp was bought by the scouts 50 years ago and was a plantation in the 1700's and 1800's right until the scouts bought it. The land was totally virgin until we showed up.

We have been on 2 hunts and the 3rd date is set. I am pretty sure she started at the local council office and worked her way around to get all the permission needed.

A larger camp would have a live in caretaker on the property - once you have permission, the place is yours.

You just have to do the research to make sure the land has some history.
