True but you can also search for free. Just put in California for state and see what shows.

But if you go to the LOC Historic Maps Website, you can view the maps in all their hugeness. Not get stuck in a little square. You only have to download either the ExView or MrSID Viewer. Both are free.

If your map needs are mostly in the SouthWest, you can go to my website (it's still far from finished, but it is up and running): http://1oro1.com Just Click on the References Link and when you get to the References Homepage, click on the link to Historical Maps. Most of them have been culled from the Library of Congress' Website. You can also download them from my site for free. While you are there, check out the Digitized Historical Historical Books and Military Field Manuals. All are free to download (be careful, some of the file sizes are quite large and require a fast Internet Connection). I have also included all the necessary Viewers to enjoy any of my reference materials.

I am giving TNetters first peek. The site is Virus and Trojan Free, so no need to worry. There is a lot of info on the site that has never been published before, but there ARE still some secrets that will never get published. I just wanted to give folks a great starting place to hone their researching skills.

Thanks Gollum, you do have an impressive website. 8) Thanks for sharing it--now I need to go buy a 300 gig external hard drive.

Some of the maps in that site like Okla. shows the early landowners and when I find reference to a certain name, I can go to the site and overlay the current land map to see just where it is located without having to leave home.

300GB? Guess again! By the time I'm done putting all the stuff I want people to be able to download, you will need something much larger (I have a 2 Terrabyte RAID Tower that has a ton of stuff on it). I just have to sort through the stuff that doesn't deserve posting, and the stuff that I can't (or won't) post for whatever reasons.

Like I said, the site is FAR from being finished.

As you can see from the site, that my main thrust is to beat into everybody who ever thought about heading out into the desert, how important the subject of safety and survival is. As much as I want to propagate this obsession, I don't want to hear about anybody being killed. I play things fast and loose in a lot of aspects of my life, but not with desert safety. Serious as a heart attack!

I understand what you're saying about safety and survival. Used to they were saying something like 1 or 2 quarts of water per day, now the recommendation is 1 quart per hour-every hour. You know you're in trouble when the Garmin and Tom-Tom screen flashes . All joking aside, when you're doing is incredible. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication in getting this info out to the public. No doubt you'll save someone's life as they'll think twice before doing something stupid. 8) 8) 8)
