Went detecting today at the 1840s homesite and I think I dug my first old clay marble.
Most of the finds from this site range from early 1800's to late 1800's.
The house has been gone for a long time, and it is up in the country, so I don't find many modern items here.

The marble doesn't look perfectly round like the modern marbles you see.
It measures .59-.60" on my cheap calipers.
I haven't cleaned it yet, other than just licking my thumb, and rubbing a little dirt off.

The Shield nickel came from another site and is just for size comparison.

Can anyone tell me about this marble, such as type, age, material, etc.

Thanks

Can't help much with ID but that is a nice find! I'd leave it dirty, looks good in the pictures. :icon_thumright:

Cheese wrote a great post on marble ID, its the "what was i thinking" sticky post in the marble forum.

Thanks Beez. Yeah I don't think I will clean it anymore, the dirt shows the imperfections/cavities.
Cheese helped me on another marble I dug once, hopefully he will see this one and comment.

Hello again bonepicker!

Nice clay marble! They were made from the 1940s back, for who knows how long... probably centuries. Unfortunately they are very common and value is little but they are always very cool to find. Hope you find more!

Cool find! I bet a lot more exciting finding marbles that way than "hunting" for them on Ebay!!

Thanks Cheese....
This is the first clay I have dug. Been wanting to find one for a long time.
Found it on accident while metal detecting.
