Very interesting article and story. There are not many, if any, natural caves in the area of Highlandtown, but it was an area of eastern Baltimore where the early lager beer brewers dug many deep lagering tunnels to keep their beers cool. The area has a naturally higher elevation than the downtown areas closer to the port, thus it became know as "Highlandtown", and was the natural place to dig deep holes and tunnels. Just a little further east of Highlandtown on Eastern Avenue, was the end of the city limits. This was known as a rough and rowdy area where beer and liquor could be sold on Sundays, and many "houses of ill repute", gambling, and other amusements congregated. Since this poor chap was able to walk or run home from this cave, it makes me wonder why he could not lead the authorities back to the place, unless of course he somewhat intentionally spent a wild weekend just outside the city limits. lol

Yes Brewery Tunnels can look like Caves.

hard to see here, Because there has been that white Truck backed into this one for about 10 or so years now.

I always thought it was a Natural cave. But was told one day by a local,
it was a beer Tunnel.
& though it's facing the wrong Direction. Rumor at least is
that it leads under Yuengling Brewery.
if true. Pottsville may be a catacomb of caves from all the Breweries in town over the years. there was also Rumors of beer deliveries via Underground tunnels during Prohibition.

so anywho, he could have been taken to a beer tunnel
