Asking permission to hunt

How do you all go about asking for permission to hunt? Is there a certain way of asking or going about asking? Can you give me some helpful communication tips? How you say it and what to say?
A lot of people turn you down when you ask permission.

It's like approaching a cute girl. You might be nervous, and you might get rejected. But eventually, one of them will smile and talk to you. Just be polite, let them know you will clean any trash you find, fill all of your holes, and not make a mess of the lawn. Sometimes to sell it you can offer some of your finds if you want. Keep asking, and don't get too discouraged with a few "no's." You'll get some yes' too!

I like Ox's response! I don't have a detector yet but have gotten hundreds of permissions for digging privies looking for bottles. I look the homeowner in the eye, smile, be confident and friendly, explain the process I want to do, and I always offer to share whatever I find. I don't know how that goes with metal detecting.
