  • George,

    This is a PS.

The VERY BEST Reference book on the LAD is: The Lost Adams Diggings: Myth, Mystery and Madness, by Jack Purcell December 2003. It is available on Amazon for just under $20 new with shipping.

The location of the Aspen stand (from French's book - pages 27 and 231) is very important as is the Tolbert article page 229 (nothing else in French's book sheds anything new on the LAD). Also, the information in the 1927 El Paso article is very important (this information has never been published anywhere - you need to get it from French).

    Good luck.

    George,

Here is the last of my initial chopped up reply.

French wrote two articles related to his unpublished book and one was published in May/June 2011 issue of Gold Prospectors magazine, and a second in the December issue of Lost Treasure magazine. He gave all the details of Paul's canyon (what he thinks might be the LDA but without any gold) in these two articles. If you are interested in a thumbnail description of Paul's LAD find read this story from French: The Lost Adams Diggings-Amarillo Prospectors & Treasure Hunters Association

    George,

    Here is #4.

If you want to know if the LAD has been found remember what it is famous for - tons of gold placers, and nothing else matters so if the people who claim to have found the LAD suddenly became very rich than I would believe it otherwise they fall into the long list of individuals who have found the LAD just to get notoriety and hopefully some money as they have found nothing else of value. If you search the web you will find a lot of different people claimed to have found the LAD, and they are still all broke. One even claimed he found it as well as all the gold wealth but left it all there as it didn't belong to him - he refused to say where he found it as he didn't want anyone to steal the gold...

    George,

    Here is #3.

As each Alteration Zone lode gold deposit has its own unique signature (like human fingerprints) and no two are alike so it would be very easy to see if Paul had found a new deposit. ASU in Tucson does this for free and keeps a gold mineral registry log. Paul is known around Phoenix as being a con artist selling anything he can for a buck. They never found the large deposit of gold there and Paul (and his partner - Ron Schade) are still very broke. I mentioned this to French and haven't heard from him since. Paul's canyon is easy to find but the gold isn't, it is shown on the old topo maps as "Old Canyon". There is a small Hydrothermal Alteration Zone I saw on a satellite mineral map of the area just a couple of miles NE of the mouth of this canyon but the water flow wouldn't carry any gold from the HAZ into Paul's canyon as the water flow is out of the canyon (NW flow).

    Here is #2.

I believe French mentioned a book he wrote but said no one would publish it - about finding the LAD but I don't remember its name. Apparently French met a man from the Phoenix area (Paul Hale) who claimed to have found the LAD in an area far East of D-Cross mountain (French had previously determined the LAD had to be East of D-Cross and put it in his book) that means this was the wrong place to be the LAD. But for some reason French became hooked on Paul's fabled LAD location even though it was in the wrong area and didn't have any gold to speak of. Paul claimed to have found a bit of gold there but never took it to Tucson to have it cataloged to see if it was a new find or just salted from another location.

    George,

I initially wrote to Dick French in early 2012 (I got his address from his book "Four Days to Fort Wingate") and asked him about the location of the Aspen stand he talked about in his book. He sent me an old topo where he had made a penciled mark to its location. I was unable to verify the location as this area was on private land that was closed off.

French did tell me that years after he wrote "Four Days from Fort Wingate" he became convinced that Adams did not go to Fort Wingate (as his book stated) but went to another fort up north instead.

The old address I have for French is: P.O. Box 663, Raton, NM 87740-0663

If you reach him you might ask him about the El Paso Herald August 13, 1927 article - Prospector spent years hunting Lost Adams Diggin's believes rich mine covered up by Indians.

TreasureNet limits replies to 1000 characters so there is no room left to answer your questions in any detail.

    Take care.
