The old statement "It's not about having the Gold, it's about finding it" really holds true for me. I have been prospecting the American Rivers up through the lower Yuba rivers for a few years now and lately have been using a wonderful resource to assist me in finding bigger and better placers. CalTopo.com is fantastic and allows me to superimpose the current river positions over the ancient river positions as far back as 1885! Last weekend I grabbed some of the biggest flakes I have gotten in a while using nothing but a pan, crow bar, and small shovel based on researching ancient maps.
