downieville california - metal detecting in national forest

i found some un-claimed land east of downieville california in the national forest. can i use a metal detector to prospect on this site.

YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!-except if it's a historical site--which the fs absolutely refuses to tell you where they are--sos that a way they can fine you--take your detector and the vehicle you took in-sweet ain't it John
