Hey Cork...sheesh...when I saw your post I thought you had taken your MXT and gone and found it!! I presume you are not the lucky Mr. Hughes, or am I mistaken?

How have you been doing with your nugget hunting these days...any success?

    Jim.

    Hi Jim,

I wish it was me! He found it in my stomping grounds. After I heard that story I was tempted to jump in my truck and head out there! Been slowing down on the nugget shooting. The desert heat is getting oppressive. I have been spending time rebuilding my giant drywasher and restoring a car. I need to find some nuggets to afford my other hobbies!

Well Sean, detecting in the heat isn't always my first choice either. I much prefer the pool, or camping by water. I normally reserve my prospecting activities for the autumn when the bugs are gone, and its refreshingly cool. Even a bit of snow is just fine.

Good luck with restoring your car, now thats a worthwhile project. Maybe getting up very early in the morning is something to consider...a few early hours of detecting before the heat builds.

Nothing much to add, just wanted to check in with you. All the best,

    Jim.

I rather hunt in the heat Friday was 102 and I hunted till 1300. When it hits 127 deg I hunt till about 0900 and then go back out at night with a head lamp. The best thing about heat is that you won't see a nothing person as stupid as you. Not only that I hate the cold (65 deg or less). I thank I have been in the desert way too long. And Jim I know if you hit 2 deg in the winter it's a heat wave.

Hey Yellow Hammer...right now around these parts the dawn starts just about 4:30 AM but maybe it's different over your way... being further south. Seems like a good time to get in some detecting. Yep, I've often tried night hunting with an angle-adjustable light strapped around my neck, but you know, I still prefer daylight to see better...especially skunks.

Heat is a funny thing. Summertime here, we can get close to or at 100 degree F. But it's not bad at all if it's dry heat. On the other hand, manys the time I've used our portable shower nailed to a tree...in sub-freezing weather...but it's not too bad while the water lasts..then look out! Mind, we always get a huge fire going prior to showering.

Now Yellow Hammer, you can savor this numbing wilderness experience too, maybe even accompanied by the blood curdling howl of nearby voracious timber wolves...followed by hot pork and beans mind you...if you can ever find an excuse to travel up this way in the autumn. We could outfit you in a warm parka too, then go hunt in the cold and snow. Ahhhh, the stuff from which good memories are made.

Point is, I think your recent success finding gold, illustrates what determination can achieve... regardless of the heat...or the cold. All the best with your nugget hunting Ron, we'll speak with you later...

    Jim.

    It's a nice find.

I wonder who's mining claim he stole it from.

    I know, my bad.

It's just that I know that most places in that area are either claimed or wilderness areas or state park.

But, I shouldn't assume the worst.

Re: Last weekends find: 8.7 ounce nugget!!!!!!!!

if it was my claim i would be digging holes all over that place.

i can understand him not wanting to give out the location of the area if the claim is his or he is going to file on it, but to never go back?

thats just totally insane unless it belongs to someone else and he doesnt want to get caught prospecting there.

That's kind-of what I was thinking, too. (among a few other things - like what I posted earlier).
