It won't hold a candle to something like the MXT or a number of other detectors with atrue AM mode. On the other hand, it can get surprising depth on larger stuff (1 Dwt and larger) and in some pretty bad ground. I had a GTI 1500 and did some in-ground tests with it in AZ, with the larger stuff, and was pretty impressed. ..Willy.

As Willy said it can do an OK job on the larger nugget pieces that are shallow. I have the 1500 and found it can't find a thin gold chain in all metal so I guess nuggets are out. There are many better detectors out there that have higher gain and freq which find tiny gold easier. That is why Garrett makes the Stinger.

Sandman chains are a notoroiusly troublesome object to retrieve. Some detectors read them as each link is seperate and thus harder to find. There are much better machines than any Garrett BUT there are also worse too. Use it to pay and play and save up finds to fund a designated unit for prospecting. Unfortunately used but not abused abound like crazy in this stinkn' depression-tons a au 2 u 2 -John

Kando--I see you've got some great advice from some seasoned detectorists--I'll agree that a gold specialist machine will work better, but I also started out with a lower end machine and was able to find gold with it. If nothing else, swing that machine of yours until you know it like the back of your hand--investigate and dig all kinds of targets--nothing beats experience, and when you finally make the switch to a specialty gold machine--all that experience and knowledge will transfer over to your benefit.

    All the best,
