Follow up to Gold Hunting in New Zealand for Geos
Hi all.
You never know who is going to read these threads. I recieved a email from a Geo studying placer deposits in NZ and Australia. Turns out that about 35 years ago I used to fly Radio Controlled model aircraft with her parents when I lived in NZ. How much of a coincidence is that?
If you are interested you can check out this website and her studies on the matter. http://www.otago.ac.nz/geology/peopl...ner/index.html
I thought maybe Lanny and Jim in particular may be interested ?
Cheers

Hi Hoser John, Good to see you're still about. lol Don't people like that make you feel verrrrry amateur-ish? I mean, we can usually get a good feeling about a place and if the signs are right we can usually knock off a nugget or two, but the Geos go way beyond that. But to specialise in an area as unusual as that takes a pretty special kind of person. I can't retain knowledge till the next day....

My Mom(sure miss her) was a extremely educated person(PHD and Doc) but she loved her geology best, said it grounded her(no pun intended) and the rock fever was passed down to currently 4 generations. She definately presents a compulsive person persona,so needed these days. I'll be busy but will return to read more. 1 day I'm there in NZ!!! John

Hi WildCat, how are you doing these days?
Thanks for the thought, I did read it through but admit I was hard pressed to take much of it in. I don't know what has become of Lanny lately, you know as much as me...he just quit posting.

Nope. Not in the least. My son is an everyday guy who decided to head off to university. When the dust settled, he was a high honors graduate with a major in mineralogy. He's written lots of fancy reports too, and still does. But take him nugget hunting and see the difference between much of what was learned in school labs and "mapping" in the field vs practical everyday experience searching for precious metals. Thats not a putdown either, but there is a distinct difference between these types of knowledge and know how.
He knows how to map for them, I grant you. And he can identify rocks and minerals, and tell you all about how they formed and what they should indicate. But when it comes to panning and sluicing, metal detecting, following gold's pathways in a creek, highbanking and dredging, and the endless bits of knowledge learned in the school of hard knocks over many years to actually be successful getting some precious metal into your hands...with all due respect, he would be a rank novice compared to most folks frequenting this gold forum.
Jim.
PS: I should mention that if that bum from New Zealand should read this post, he might wanna check his mail in about three weeks from June 2nd. Enjoy JW and thankyou.
Time, oh good sweet time...where did you go?

lol Nice to hear from you Jim. I hope Lanny is OK too. I am sure JW will spot your comment Jim. Funny thing... DF said she owned a Minelab, but it wasn't really the right thing for her (a Geo) to be seen with it. I say, go get 'em girl! I mean what is life if you don't have a hobby?
I see a gent on another forum has put up some great photos of the new Whites TDI Pro. It is also the Australian version I believe. I am getting seriously interested.
