    nugget or what????

First time posting in this section of the forum.

Found this rock on the atv trails. Actually dug it up since the Ace 250 found it. I swore it registered as a nickel, but now that it is out of the ground it keeps beeping as a penny when I swing it under the coil.
ANy ideas on what it could be After I dug it up and saw it at first I thought I had a gold nugget (since it registered in that range) but now I am not sure what the heck I got.

    Thanks

    Re: nugget or what????

Very unlikely this is gold. Gold does not corrode. And gold would not have penny (copper) conductivity.

Deetectors are calibrated to take ground mineralization into account. With an air test the apparent conductivity increases due to lack of ground mineralization.

On the other hand copper weathers to a green color (malachite).

Some simple chemical tests might help. Suggest you Ask-a-Librarian at the U.S. Geological Survey. The librarian will direct you to a geologist who might be able to help. www.usgs.gov

Actually it is a very interesting rock specimen known as "Leaverite" as in leave it right where ya found it!! Gold is easy to ID-use a knife--if it cracks, crumbles or crunches under pressure it ain't gold.Magnet is a good aide too as gold being non ferrous is not magnetic-Tons a au 2 u 2-John

A guy at a local prospecting shop got me with this the other day. I took a rock in, flaked with shiny stuff, to see if it was gold. He tells me it's fools gold. I fell for the oldest trick in the book.

Then he tells me it's "Leaverite", and I kinda get excited. He asks if I know what that means, and I say no...he says "leave er right there"...

hey, i used to be a photo lab tech, go grab some film wash from your local photo supply store and drop a bit of the tarnished areas of those nuggets in there, it should eat away the tarnish
