1st time really out with MXT
Okay, spent a full day with the MXT in an area where we have hit pretty hard with Minelab 2100’s, 3000, 3500 and a 4000. This is the first time I have really used the MXT, besides testing on my property.
A few real nice pieces have been pulled out with the Minelabs. A 1.66 ozer, a couple of ½ ozers and several smaller; but none in the last couple of trips out. They weren’t found that deep, although the 1.66 ozer was about 14”. There are several spots where the gold was found, that nearby, it’s real trashy with rusted falling apart cans. Thought I would check out the MXT’s discrimination. I hit those trashy spots the hardest.
I ran in prospecting at about max on gain and SAT. Threshold was a bit rough, but wasn’t bad. I wasn’t concerned with the numerous breaks in the threshold. Used the display for the most part. I dug all targets less than 50% iron probability and VDI between 0 and +70. On the 10-30% iron probability, I either dug bullets and brass or after digging, the probability rose to 60+ and the target was iron. Any time the percentage bounced between 20-60% I still dug; with above results. I didn’t dig anything with a solid 60% and above.
No gold was found, but wondering about technique?

I think I would dig everything unless the iron probability was at least 80% or 85% or higher. Some small pieces of gold read iron sometimes.

Re: 1st time really out with MXT
Shep, sounds like you've got your MXT set up correctly. All that is required now is to run your coil over a nugget. By the way, optimally tuned, in most soils your MXT can find a quarter-ouncer at 14", thus the 1.66 ouncer would have been no problem at all. HH jim

Re: 1st time really out with MXT
Snakejim, as I said, this area has been hit hard with Minelabs (4 different PI's w/ 4 different operators, and probably 20 trips out there each). Now considering it's a 12 acre parcel, in prime gold country, only probably 8 pieces have been found (of those only 3 little ones. I was hoping to fish out of the trashy area, maybe a little one or two, using the discrimination. If I were to dig everything up to 80%; I might as well stick with the 4000 (which I dig everything with, unless I start digging bits of rusted cans).
Jim M, I've read enough and beleive the MXT to be a fine machine. That's why when I bought one for my brother, I got one too. Wondering now tho, whether I should try the discrimination feature out on the Minelab 18000?
Maybe need a lesson?
