New Garrett ATX - 2 lost quarters in grass already!!

OK I'm new to metal detecting so the learning curve is steep.

Read the Garrett ATX manual and am trying to get the settings dialed in.

It came with the Deepseeker 20" coil on it already.

Tossed a couple quarters in my thick grass (4") and although I'm getting close I can't find them.

Is the Deepseeker not a good choice for surface hunting? I thought maybe it would be good all-around.

I do have a Garrett PinPointer coming today or tomorrow. Is that a real good tool to precisely locate the quarter?

Since they are just on top of the ground you need to lower the sensitivity.

Is it ok to learn with just the Deepseeker or should I learn first with the stock DD?

I'll lower the sensitivity. Appreciate the guidance.

I don't have that detector, but typically the DD is when you want to discriminate. No mater what, if you put the coil over those coins, it should scream. Good thing it is quarters and not nuggets that you tossed. LOL

Funny thing is the detector is screaming right on top of them but I STILL can't find them in the grass.

It's a thick St. Augustine grass that I have spent two years getting into awesome shape... except currently I regret that decision lol!!

I need the Garrett PinPointer. Should be here soon.

But using another quarter I can see and practicing I'm already getting better with the new machine.

The goal is to practice quite a bit so in the field I'm not making as many dumb mistakes.

The ATX is probably the best beach detector on the market for wet/damp salty sand but forget about using it for any practical discrimination. Get yourself a CTX 3030 for this task and you'd be all set to head straight to Galveston for some serious "cherry pick'n".

BTW, I would most likely start with the stock coil for the first 100 hours swinging then switch out to the deep seeker for the next 100 hr and compare, Oh and get yourself a couple of good (beach) sand scoops..........good luck!

Using the DD coil I found both quarters quickly.

Closed my eyes and tossed them back out.

Found them with ease.

It's certainly a lot harder too pinpoint with a 20" coil especially when you first get started..

As soon as your pin pointer comes that will give you a great edge with serface finds. If it as a Garrett you can use it on edge to help cover more ground quickly.

Compare the signal from your quarters with the signal from a Nickel. I am not familiar with the metal content of quarters, this was posted here on Tnet not long ago, however the last I knew a Nickel is made from the metal 'nickel' and for gold detecting it causes the detector to think it is gold. I did not know that.

Heading out for Northern Nevada in a couple days.

Am excited to have 10 days to road-trip and prospect.

Looking forward to that first big nugget I can hardly carry to the truck lol.
