Fill your holes in remote areas?

I occasionally detect some open public ground that has been hammered over the years.
You can see evidence of cut brush and rolled rocks but that's about it.

In the last couple years somebody is going up there and leaving 6"-12" deep holes everywhere.

How freaking difficult is it to kick the dirt back in the hole?!
Lazy with no respect is my first impression.

I figure this guy probably also craps on top of the ground, then leaves a little pile of toilet paper next to it...

on my claim I'll leave all the holes I want.

Because its no one elses damn business.

Plus they are more of a scrape most of the time.. I do kick some dirt back in. but do like to see where I've been.

Big craters get made safe.

I sure as hell am never rebuilding a pile I scrape down. I will not un-rake a patch.

If im on open public lands or A private parcel that I get permission for.

I do "fill my holes"

There is a local highgrader/zero integrity nugget hunter. That will leave his hole and his trash target sitting right on top of the pile.

I can always tell when hes been in an area.

And yes even though there are decent VLFs out there. If you are serious you are gonna want a minelab.

If your in a spot thats been pounded by them and theres nothing left for you...how is that a negative reflection on them:dontknow:

Theres no socialism in nugget hunting...no one is obligated to leave gold for others...:laughing9:

Goldwasher pretty much said he fills his holes unless he's mining on his claim.
That's what I read anyway.

Glad to see that. That's respect for land owners and the public.
Wish everyone did that.

Personally I fill the dig holes on my own property because I don't want to see every place I dug something up.
It would start looking like a battle zone after not too long.

On my claim I kick the dirt in the holes because I know other people are using the land as well to hike and hunt.
I figure if it's worse than a turkey scrape, it gets smoothed over with the boot.

Maybe it's because my grandpa taught me that 35 years ago. Or maybe it was my dad.

depends on the location...imo I like to see where others and myself have been? I also check others hole(s) and have found what they obviously were digging for but couldn't find the tiny bit. I don't leave any craters and sold my boat anchor "crater maker" (gpx5000) because I'm lazy and don't like to dig too deep...so I focus on smaller shallow bits with the simple lightweight Gold Monster. So I kinda go both ways on the holes depending on the location and/or depth of the hole? jmo...…..

Re-read my first post that created all the hate and discontent. Sometimes I fill them back up and sometimes I don't....."depending on the location and/or depth of the hole".

Like Goldwasher….. I also don't re-rake tailings or re-stack boulders from dredge tailings, etc. Also don't worry too much about a 3" to 6" shallow hole in a heavily mined site that isn't to my eye, "pristine" and "beautiful" like some of you guys seem to think.....

With the new detector you are probably being more consistent in getting out? Also probably learning more about how to go about it?

What detector are you using and what were u using before?

I only takes 2 Seconds to Brush the Dirt & Leaves back into
the hole with your foot & tramp on it. if you stood Up before refiling.

I'd feel Unfinished, If I left the Hole all lying open anywhere .

Even in my Own Yard, Where I don't worry about Dirt Showing,
& it being obvious where every hole I dug is :tongue3:
I Still brush the Dirt back in And Tramp it down

I am guilty of "sloppily" refilling holes in remote areas, especially in excavation and renovation areas, but I do the bulk of the refill with my feet, even in those spots. It's just a habit.

Nope they really are that much better.

The amount of gold I've pulled from spots i had hit with goldmasters and Gold bugs.

Speaks for itself. Major increase.

i went over a spot with my GB2 after my sdc stopped getting stuff.

The only thing i found was those tiny little red hot rocks that sound like gold

Someone would get a ear full and would be provoked to fist fight, I would do my darnedest to get that guy mad and to come at me so we could duke it out, love teaching lessons :cross:

Guess I'd have to see it to believe. On my Makro GR those hot rocks are easily ignored because they show up as 0-10 or 90-100.
Granted they could be masking gold below but I have not found that happening yet. I could see really hot ground requiring a PI like the SDC, but I doubt it's the magic bullet everywhere. Sounds like they have some good technology with that unit. Goofy looking as heck.

i was using the fors gold then the fors plus. i found 1 piece of gold with the fors. i kept that spot in my mind ever since i found it. the minelab found 2 ounces in that spot 20' by 20'. i remember getting a beep against a manzanita with the fors, but it did not repeat. at the time i didnt know any different, but now i know why. i went there with my sdc when i got it. of course it was a eureka moment when i remembered and said DUH! why havent i hit that spot i actually found gold at! well it found 15 +/- pieces. a few 1-2 gram and quite a few .5 and some crumbs. once i put the pieces together i was able to uncover a 1 ounce gold in quartz. the it was on the surface, but who's going to strip a pine tree of the dead fall and detect under it unless you have a clue? each piece is a clue to another. but i did not have the knowledge that is learned through success before i had my sdc. a was at it for 2 years before i bought it. i average 2-4 outings per month. that hasnt changed the whole time ive been at it. successful or not. sometimes i cant get out for 2-3 weeks. sdc is at 2.75 oz for 2 yrs. 4500 is at 5.25 for 1 year. ive been working a lot so havnt had the time to swing......and on that note.....we just dug some footings in a tailing pile. the house has been scraped and the whole place is a dredge site. and guess who has permission??? oh yeah!!! i try to be diligent about filling my hole, especially in frequented areas. i have some back woods holes to fill on my final trip to that location

the fors was overwhelmed by little hot rocks at that location. but the ground itself was not hot, the sdc found several .5 gram at 5" ....over and over again. for 1 grain to 5 grain it really shines

Let me get this right, you would get into a physical altercation, and might even go to jail, over someone not filling their holes back in?

That reminds me of that old guy that shot the teenager for walking across his lawn. Now I fully understand property rights, but the action has to fit the crime too.

Attack my children and you will see the south end of a north facing shotgun, but put a dent in the Scott's Turf-Builder Plus sod on the front lawn...mmmmmm...no, said gun will remain inside, and never see the light of day. I am not going to jail over some crimped clover.

The same with beating a guy up over some unfilled holes. It may be rude not to refill a hole, but even worse to invoke a fistfight over it.

(Note: I did not mention defending my wife because she has a cute little Kimber Micro 9mm)

If I see someone leaving holes they will get an earful... don't give 2 craps if they are armed or not.

Leaving holes is disrespectful to the land... landowner(s)... other detectorists including me... And I don't take well to people who show disrespect to others.

IF you leave holes you should not own a detector... your irresponsible and disrespectful to "this thing we have".

Perhaps this will be clear when you sprain or brake your ankle in a hole you leave on your way back out.

My "signature" states the 3 most paramount RULES of detecting... IF you cannot follow them... SELL your detector to someone who will.

Like my grandfather said as he took my BB gun away and broke it over his knee after hitting his Cadillac...

"You're not responsible enough to own this yet."

PS... Do you know what separates humans from animals ?

Humans fill their holes... animals don't.

exactly. i wouldnt trade my sdc for anything. i can go to a place that gets hit daily by others and find a few, just about every time
