MXT would be the one for all that you want to do.

one thing that i dont understand is that everyone keeps suggesting to me to get a lower grade detector. can some one explain this to me why the mxt would be better than the dfx. maybe even the xlt. im really thinking of the dfx. please explain.

.....The reason is the XLT and DFX are not gold detectors...The..MXT..is a all around detector.Where they say that the XLT & DFX are all around detectors And nugget detectors but in real life they are not really.good nugget hunters................... But now the MXT is good for coins & jewelry & nuggets............But to me the best all around detector is..Minelabs X-terra 70...............== Jim==

How is the GMT working out for you?
What is the learning curve on it?

Good question!!To be honest with you I just got it but I am getting the hang of it quickly,I have been around alot of gold found with them(GMT)I got rid of my GB2 because I didnt want to have to fuss with ground balancing,my bad,you have to get that down for gold machines, the GMT has a auto GR.B.and a manual GR.B.it is recommended to run it in the manual,so the machine doesnt balance some gold out.

i would go with the MXT as well if i was interested in coins jewelry and nuggets. (if your heart is set on a whites that is). the DFX and the XLT would not be the best choice for nuggets. it has to do with the operating frequency they run on. some frequencies are more sensitive to small targets, like a nugget, and others are better for larger targets like relics. just because the MXT isnt the most expensive, doesnt mean it is a lower line.price doesnt always equate to a better machine. it all depends on what you want to hunt for and which is the best tool for the job.

With the MXT it's fast to adjust the dials for different settings/soil condtitons. The DFX takes time to scrole through the program and make ajustments.
I'll just follow you with My E-trac ! ! ! !

I dont think so
I own an XLT and it has a pre program for gold.
does the same thing as the dfx when it comes to gold
mine has prospecting coins jewelry and relic plus you can program it yourself.

Re: whats the better all around detector to pick whites dfx or xlt? for all purp
The XLT (and DFX) has a prospecting 'program' which doesn't mean squat when it comes to actual nugget hunting and when comparing to an MXT/GMT. I've read that the MXT also has the coil driven at a higher voltage. Aside from that, the MXT has a much more aggressive ground tracking circuit and a much higher SAT retune speed. The MXT is basically a GMT that operates at a lower frequency and with a few bells and whistles (coin/relic modes.. disc.). Like a lot of gold detectors, it's capable of using an extreme amount of preamp gain.. but also has the software/circuitry to allow it to operate smoothly with said gain. Plain and simple, look at what the nugget hunters are using (when they use a VLF). You'll have to look long and hard to find a DFX/XLT out in the goldfields, but MXT's are commonly used. The XTerra 70 is making a name for itself as a prospecting detector too. Don't get me wrong, almost any detector will find gold, but most coin/jewelry/relic detectors are limited in their capabilities. They generally won't see the tiny stuff (more of that out there than large) and will have problems seeing nuggets in the often harsh ground where it occurs. Steve Hershbach has used all the above detectors and, on his website's nugget detector recommendations, doesn't recommend the DFX/XLT for nugget hunting. Hmmm.. I wonder why. The MXT/GMT both have glowing endorsements. The XTerra 70 is also on his detector recommendations list. ..Willy. PS.. I tested out an XLT using my 3 grain test nugget aannnnd.. thumbs down.
