Fianally went and asked permission. These two are right next to each other. Minister said "ok" and principle also. There is also one other school there, not sure of the age .And 2 buildings(old) on either side of the church, where the nuns live,I'm guessing.

Been there 3 times now in the last week.At least 6 hrs of detecting. Can't find anything old, except 1 wheat(1944)

The yard or yards are about a 2-3 block square area. And this is in a downtown area of a small/medium sized city.Principle said he don't know of any fill dirt ever being brought in.

Its right around the corner from where I live.I don't recall anyone ever detecting it,even if they have ,it is a big place. Also these are private schools related to the Catholic church.A person would have to have permission to hunt it,some areas are fenced in and marked private.

Why can't I find anything old? Think it is too deep? Found allot of new money, most laying in the top 2-4 inches.Found one zinc in terrible shape at about 5-6 inches.Thought it was a IH,, :(

I have been around the front and back of both schools and the back of the church were there are big trees.I have not been out in the more open areas of the front yards were there are no trees. And a high traffic road, its like being in a spot light.

Once I fianally got permission I thought it would be a really good place,so far it has let me down.Should I give up on it?

Sorry this is so long.
Good Luck.

Every shool yard had a place where the kids would hang out. As far from the school as they were allowed to go. Check the outer corners first. Perhaps the property is smaller now than in the past. With a Church the front walkway and grass near the parking lot. Look for lost items from when keys were pulled out of the pocket.

Hi Flash
The first thing is that you don't know the history of these sites. Schools and churches were prime hunting sites 40 years ago so the present residents may have no idea.

You do have unstable soil if you are finding a lot of zinc cents at the 5 to 6" range. However, just one is not proof.

Also if it was why aren't you seeing deep(8") 1960-1970 coins? Why is 6" the maximum depth you are seeing for coins?

Perhaps, it is soil mineralization. You could bury some test coins in the soil and see at what depth you can detect them. If you find you can not detect pennies and dimes from 6" to 10" perhaps you should move along.

Again addressing the depth issue, you also have to remember that discrimination becomes less reliable with depth. Perhaps one day detect some faint, iffy and deep signals.

Just my 2 cents worth
George
