You should be very happy with a Minelab brand.

Re: What might be the Best detector for Alabama's high iron red clay?

i have some pretty tuff soil conditions that i hunt but its not in a clay matrix,[iron ore mines in the area and old gold, silver, copper, lots of hotrocks]. the t-2 handles it well, ive had the xt 50 and it did pretty well i just dont like the all metal mode and slower target responce. the xt70 is a better machine with its finner gb adjustments and prospecting mode, ive used my buddys some around some of the old gold mines in the area, handles our minerals pretty well

I should also mention the use of a Whites DFX with its use of all the extra settings it will handle everything but a dime on a car hood.

My DFX does great here in the Georgia clay, it's just digging it that causes problems

Re: What might be the Best detector for Alabama's high iron red clay?

If the ground varies significantly, you might want a detector with auto ground tracking. If it is consistent, you could use a unit with manual ground balance. But heavy mineralization will reduce depth & cause target ID jumping. I couldn't say that one detector outdoes every other. If there is a club in your area or a helpful dealer, you might get some good advice on what to use in your soil. HH, George (MN)

Im here in the NC red Clay and the F75 is awesome..Its fast and Deep..The F70 is getting a good reputation for stability and the Minlabs according to some is made for the Red mineralized ausie ground..The Best advise would be to go check out a few at your local Dealer..

Re: What might be the Best detector for Alabama's high iron red clay?

Could whoever asked this question send me a quart sized ziploc bag (double bagged) of the soil near them? I will run it through my lab to measure the electrical and magnetic properties. I would also like the GPS coordinates of the samples. I would make the same request of anyone who thinks that they have an interesting soil. I have a geophysical lab where I measure soil properties to improve landmine detection.
