It varies from site to site. One place I go they dont restrict me any place on land. But I need a permit to go in the water. Another place lets me detect only by the boat ramp. Every park director seems to have there own rules and it is best to ask before you start digging. (you can get into a world of trouble with the feds) my .02. Cladius.

Yep! Ask the lake administrator/office. Some let you have free reign, some have a few rules, and others say absolutely, positively NO!!
