Yes,

Spending a couple of hours experimenting in your own back yard (especially somewhere that you can make a mess of the ground) is the best thing that you can do.? Take some time to burry a couple of items ( penny, quarter, bottle cap, nail, screw, old rings...) about 4-8 inches deep about 4' min apart.? Mark each of the items with a wooden golf tee on the surface.? Experiment with the detector to find the settings that correctly reflect your target(s).? Filter enough, but not too much or you will miss the good stuff.

Also,? I would highly recommend a pinpointer such as White's bullseye locator, this makes it really easy to find the smaller treasures without destroying the local landscape.

Finally, ask permission to hunt and research the old maps and stories of your area.

Happy Hunting!
