Trouble finding older detectors/Looking also for water machine.

Hey all. Ive been searching for a machine I once used back in th 90's. It was a Garrett GTA 1000. Best machine I have used. Got into some bad elements back then and had to sell it to support some nasty habits.

Ive looked everywhere and have maybe found 3 links....busted mostly with one link im not even sure the site is still working. I left a comment but the board seems not to move ever.

Why is it so hard to find machines like this? Am I being dense and not doing something right or are they really that difficult to find?

Anyways if anyone has one or know someone who has one in good shape I will buy it. Will pay shipping. Will travel if its close enough to michigan.

I have the GTAx 550 but have been really getting mixed results. The coil is a pain and the "bell tone" on this one goes off like im in a casino.

I find good things with it but the 1000 seemed to me to be a better machine.

Im also looking for opinions on an underwater detector. Ive noticed they run quite expensive. I would be hunting in fresh water, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior,inland lakes and rivers. No deeper than about 4-5 feet.

Does brand really matter with a water machine?

They way the idiots are in this town the open water is al lthats going to be left to hunt so I might decide to pick one up. Any ideas on a good solid biginer model?

For an older machine try looking on EBay. Every so often someone will put one up and it will sell.

For a water machine stick with the name brands. Depending on what ones budget is will dictate what one should buy. You might try to do like some of us and wait until one finds one at a bargain price and use that one to trade for the one you really like....or...there are several water detectors in the $500 range that are good. For example, just to name a few, the Tesoro Tigershark is supposed to be really good in fresh water, the Garrett Seahunter is also a good one, you might be able to find a used Excal or CZ in that price range, or any of the others that are name brand.

Good luck and hope you find something in the water that the others couldn't get to.

Unless it is for sentimental reasons forget the GTA 1000, even todays cheaper machines are better. Keep checking ebay, post wanted to buy ads on the detecting forums, they gotta be out there.

You are better off with a used CZ-20 or Excalibur than a new off brand water detector. I have tried the Tiger Shark and did not care for it. In fresh water, if you can only have one, it should be a good quality VLF to start. A PI detector like the SeaHunter is a fabulous deep hunting machine, but is not versatile enough to have as your only detector up here.
