Update sixth and seventh hunt...Early fifties carnival ground 23 silver so far

This is the result of two trips, seven hours of detecting, in the best spot I have found since the mid 90's. I always knew about this carnival ground that was around for a few years in the early fifties. I tried the field a few times and only found a few wheats, nothing more. The grounds are in a large overgrown field 2 minutes walk from my house! I finally got some good info on the exact location of the grounds. Using M6, I headed off with renewed hope. Settings multi-tone, zero scrim, max sense. Dig anything deep and non-ferrous. First coin found was a quarter after 10 seconds after turning on the machine. Deepest find was a merc at 8" of soil (measured) plus 2" or 3" of grass. Total finds for the last two trips are shown including 43 wheats. The roots and sod are so thick, I modified my Predator Mod#31 Raptor (8" blade) by cutting off the factory handle and welding on a 7/8" stainless tube at a better angle of attack, under the blade. Added tough Hunt-Wilde grip. A good sharpening and it slides thru the tough stuff like butter. I found one dime and a few wheats dated in the twenties. The hot-spot is about one acre and its tough to swing thru all the brush and grass, so this spot should cough up a few more. Best of luck to all, gleaner1..

Update Early fifties carnival 23 silver so far

Made two more trips. Trip number 6, about one hour, found one merc, 5 wheats. Trip number 7, I spent three hours and found 5 mercs, one war nickel, one buff, 19 wheats, 2 canada pennies and a train/trolley token. Totals are 23 silver, 3 war nickels, 98 wheats.

Very nice, looks like you passed your goal of 20 silver!

By today's standards that is a great site, especially if it was used for only 3 or 4 years.

Thanks Rusted_Iron. I did make a final trip with the M6 and got a 1920 merc (I scratched it), plus 3 more war nickels and 6 or 8 wheats. I used an M6 for all of these finds, but it was a borrowed machine and I returned it today (Thanks Ozzman).

I posted all my finds to document and learn about a site like this. The site had no pull tabs. There are many iron signals, and I am sure a lot of them are steel pennies. But the site is free of the tons of crap you see in most parks and fairgrounds. I still think the site was virgin before I nailed it. It's just a vacant obscure field, and the area yielding coins is no larger than two acres. There is never any activity on this site. This site offers a rare opportunity to learn about the quantities of coins lost in a given situation. Totals to date: 4 Wash quarters, 17 mercs, 2 roos dimes and 1 canada dime for a total of 24 silver. Also found 6 war nicks, 6 buffs, and 7 Jeff nicks. Wheats and old canada pennies about 110 pieces. Total coins about 153. I did manage a couple newer dimes and pennies from the 60's, these must be "fliers". I am surprised I didn't find more quarters. I though I would get a half, but no luck. I will hit the site with my trusty old Garrett before freeze. Next summer I will watch the site and hit it after they mow it off, which they only do once or twice a year. I could not do a group shot of all the silver because they are stored away, but I did a group of all the pennies and nickels. I will post if I break the 30 silver mark. Best regards, gleaner1

Wow that is one heck of a site you have there. I would keep going until I could find no signals. Sigh I guess it is time to research here and see where the old fair grounds and parks use to be here in San Diego.

If you have the gift of gab, THAT is a great way to find sites. Strike up a conversation with the older folks, they will give you leads to sites that you would never find otherwise. In my case, there is absolutely no documentation to indicate that the site ever existed. I only regret that it's a newer site, can you imagine if it was dated in the 1800's? I have more info on the site, my buddy's mom, who is in her 80's, and is sharp as a tack and still drives an "automobile", says she remembers the site as a circus grounds. I can't wait for spring.
