There is an editorial on BPL in the January issue of Popular Communications. BPL consists of using the power line grid to provide Internet services, apparently by using radio frequencies over the power lines. Interference with amateur radio may be avoided - it is still experimental - by notching out the amateur band. But what about metal detectors? Will BPL increase the EMI problem to the extent of eliminating metal detecting in urban areas? Right now the first trial run of BPL is being conducted in Manassas, VA.

In every trial of BPL that I have read about, the trial was ended early due to severe interference problems with other segments of the audio spectrum. BPL is based on economic greed and not on sound science. Even with notching, there is no way to eliminate interference with existing services. You can rest assured that if this service is installed near your location, you will have problems if detecting anywhere near the lines used to transmit the signal. A long piece of wire is a very good transmitting antenna, but transmits in all directions!
