I can't comment on the VDI units. But the Tesoro Compadre is a very easy machine to learn. Not a lot of bells and whistles to distract and lose interest. Just a simple, yet very good, dectector.

This isn't a VDI machine, but I still have a Tesoro Silver Sabre with a small coil I use for newbie companions, especially kids - it's really easy to use and takes about 2 minutes to learn.

Yet it's a good machine that finds stuff.

You might want to consider buying a new first line detector and handing down your current machine. Since you are considering spending up to $1000 you have the opportunity to buy a very high performance VDI machine. Especially considering you want to use the detector for someone else to learn the hobby. Since you know your current detector you could teach them the basics of your current machine quickly and they stand a better chance of enjoying the hobby. I think that's a better option than giving a 1st timer a new machine that neither of you is familiar with.

A couple of things... You obviously don't want a ground balance, and probably not knobs that can be hit and upset the setting. So something like a Garrett 250 that's push button, or if you want to spend more than maybe a 1350 or GTI. There are of course other brands Whites, Fisher etc. that would have many choices as well.

One more thing to keep in mind is the weight of the machine - they can vary in weight by a pound or so and that can make a BIG difference in how comfortable it is to use them. Go for some of the ones that are under 3 pounds with batteries in.

Then it's easy. GTI for him and used Explorer II for you. If you think the SE or E-trac offer more, than that is where we would disagree.

PS.... I actually made the switch from the 1500 to an Explorer, so get ready for different!

i am looking to buy a second machine to be used by a family member who has a learning disability
thinking about a vdi unit and was wondering if anyone can tell me what unit has the lowest learning curve
looking to spend 500 to 1000 tops

It is just $152. About tha same as a coil.

I think you are all fools if you do not go buy a Tesoro Compadre right now.

Here is why.

What's your point? There's probably hundreds of us on this site that can do a little picture show like that. Suggesting he is a fool if he doesn't buy what you think he should? ???

PS... Impressive turtle. (I like old coins and relics)

I did not single anyone out thank you.

Read closer.

Don't start stuff with misconception.

If ya aint been there you do not know.

I mean learning tha machine.

Do not just put it down without giving it a chance.

If you go there, you will agree.

That is the challenge.

It is up to you to prove me wrong.

The Compadre upped my gold finds considerably.

Those finds are in less than two years, sense I got my Compadre.

Not any can say that.

You are just looking at the tip of the iceberg.

Hay, I have used a lot of machines.

The Compadre eclipsed them all in
a short.

Why should I not think anyone one
a fool for not owning at least one.

IP, he didn't say "he is a fool". He said "you are all fools". And he is right. I own a Compadre and it is an awesome little detector. It will find things that other detectors will not. If you don't believe it, buy one and try it. It will see around some of the trash we encounter. There has never been a machine made that can see through iron, not even a minelab. But a compadre will come close. I don't know what it is about them but you can find things in iron infestation that would have been missed with another machine. It's not as deep as others, but it will find the rest of the things you missed. You just have to go slow.

And I think everybody here would like another picture show. I sure enjoyed the one tabdog posted.
