Over the teeth is how I tell.

I've always heard that if it's gritty when you rub a pearl against your teeth, it's real. If it's smooth, it's fake.

Place the pearl against your tooth and rub it if it feels gritty it is a real natural pearl if it feels smooth if it does not than it is a composite.
