Can I just go and detect here or do I need permision? Found a road that has 3 ghost towns on it... Just empty and falling apart buildings. Did some research and found that they are or were towns. No fences, no no trespassing signs. Can I just go and detect here? I am getting a little board with the parks.

I would check the local Police Station and ask if it would be ok,
That's what i have done.
They may belong to the City or County and then it may be ok.
But they may not be,Always better to be safe then sorry.
Where is Iowa are you??

I'd check with the tax collector to find the property owners and contact them.

Isn't that south of I-80 between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids?
I used to do a lot of detecting in that area back in the mid-80's. Did very well in the parks in Grinnel, Brooklyn, Pella.
I suppose they have been beat to death by now though.
There was a plat map of the state of Iowa from 1875 that was reprinted and sold through the state historical society. There is a wealth if information in there on Iowa ghost towns. The book was fairly cheap as I recall (around $25.00).
