If anyone was to offer cleaning advice without seeing a picture, that's advice you should ignore. Everything is different so a picture is important, but if it's something you are very sure you don't care much about a description of the condition would help for suggestions.

Assuming it was dug up, it could almost be anything so until you have more info on what it could be I'd just wait and when you do proceed take your time and do it right. You may just want to clean it until you get some details without removing patina. It depends on what it is so like the earlier poster said - a picture would help get you the proper help.
