Sometimes yes sometimes no. If part of the name has changed, then typically the manufacturer has made some change to the circuitry or updated components or something. If the name is the same, then they may or may not have upgraded components during that time. That said, there are still a lot of older metal detectors that can be purchased used for a great price and that will will work really well. In some cases you might not notice a huge difference in performance between the older version and the newer version.

Is a 2000 Chevy Silverado the same as a 2010 Chevy Silverado? They both have basically the same motor and transmission, but they aren't the same. Improvements are made to the design and practicality of the machine over time. The newer detector might get better depth, better separation, better battery life. They are always trying to improve the machines, but some of the improvements can be nothing more than bells and whistles (backlights, ergonomics, etc.). I guess it really depends on the machine in question. Some of the Tesoro models have been basically unchanged since their inception. Just my opinion.
