I went from an Ace 350 to a Minelab Safari. The Safari is like the E-Trac, but without all the bells a whistles. I woulkd suggest talking to Mike at Woodland http://woodlanddetectors.com/ He will give you a deal that nobody else can beat. I also bought a smaller coil from him. Give him a call.

When you ask that question ... You leave your self open to finding out what some one else is useing and telling you ..................... That what they use is the best in the world ........ Then you get one and hate it .............. You really have to do your own foot work................

I would visit the manufacturers websites to learn more about the various models than to read what some newbie will try to get you to buy the one they are using. One of them is Fisher http://www.fisherlab.com/hobby/index.html

http://www.tesoro.com/

http://whiteselectronics.com/

http://www.minelab.com/usa/consumer

Stick with the major brands and not the funny China made ones. Tesoro is the only one that has a Lifetime Warranty.

Let me exlpain something to you, Sandman. I have been MDing on and off for the past 10 years. Just because I dont answer everyones post does not make me a newbie.

My #1 detector right now is the Garrett AT Pro. Somw people who bought early got bad ones but factory corrected problems starting with March units.

Pros: Can go underwater to 10' (most gold rings lost in waist deep water).
Has both auto & manual ground balance. Numerical ID & 3 tone ID. Using manual GB & STD mode, got a clad dime down 7" that IDed correctly. I have been told even the more expensive Minelabs don't have good visual ID past 7".
Any sweep speed is fine.

The STD mode requires essentially no learning-find deep coins w/out practice.
Separates good in STD mode. Can be set to reject almost everything but coins & is real stable & quiet in bewteen beeps from accepted metal.

With less discrimination, a great gold finder due to 15 kHz frequency. Favors the low conductors like gold & nickels-air test about 15" on nickel, but in air tests does 11"+ on a dime.

Weighs just over 3 lbs w/4 AAs, so easy for most to use for hours.

Cons: numerical ID is small. If whole detector goes underwater, headphones needed for that are $85 extra. Comes with headphones that use odd connector.
A headphone adapter costing $34 is needed to use regular phones.

That's pretty much all I have to say about it now. Best wishes, George (MN)

www.garrett.com should be added to the major brands websites. I've been detecting since 1976 & have used about 50 detectors, but this doesn't rule out you might prefer something else to the AT Pro. I tried to be honest, listing some negatives. Best wishes, George (MN)

Whoa, hold on guy, don't get your jockeys in a bunch. No offense and didn't mean you were a newbie Georges Minelab Safari. Just to remind everyone that the enthusiasm of a newbie's choice of detectors may not have the best intrests of the poster at heart and they should do a lot of their own research on what is best for them. Do you have a problem with me posting where I think I can help? I've been here a long time.......... :coffee2:

I tried to include the Garrett link, but got called to the phone.

Relax, guys. I've been detecting for about 40 years and STILL am a newbee in some types of detecting. Sandman's reply seemed very generic, not aimed at anyone specific. TTC

I am currently using an Ace 250, but am looking to upgrade. I am looking in the $1,000-$1,500 range, but would rather spend less. I Live in New England and hunt mostly parks and woods. What would you suggest for possible detectors? What should I look for in features? I look forward to some input, thanks.

Sabisch posted on another site a couple of years ago that the Safari and ETrac/Explorer line were developed separately. They are unrelated except at the very basic level (some sounds, coil type, etc).

Whoa... He was just trying to be helpful and he didn't call you a newbie. But if you want to get technical, you are using a Safari when there are far better options out there by the same manufacturer...
