Lost signals....
I had several lost signals today. I am still trying to decide if my MD is any good, it's a Whited Prizm 4. Quite a few times I got a signal, swept back and forth many times to make sure it's a good signal worthy of digging, dug a plug and rechecked the plug and hole, then there's nothing? I can go to "all metal" and usually get a signal, but then I feel like I'm probably digging trash. Is that a symptom if a low quality MD?
Also sometimes it seems like in all metal I get a signal everywhere I scan, so it doesn't really help. Literally everywhere I sweep the MD in all metal I get a strong tone. This does not happen all the time, I'd say about 50% of the time "all metal" seems to work properly. Ideas?

Re: Lost signals....
Sometimes - rust will be "the missing signal" pita. Also, depending on where you are - hot rocks.
On the White's all-metal issues - sometimes that happens - it cannot discriminate out ground bounce-back - in other words - its not tuning, or not tuning correctly. However, some detectors DO have a constant sound, and you have to listen for the different sound.
Worse yet - you can't say all White's, or even a specific type of White's will all sound the same. Each detector, no matter what the brand, have their own little idiosyncrasies.

Number one reason could be that rust Mrs. oroblanco mentioned. Or when was the last time you took off the coil cover and cleaned it out?

Re: Lost signals....
In the Discriminate mode, you may get a false signal if you are close to a chunk of iron.....it can throw your signal off and/or produce false signals. Going to All Metal and scanning the surrounding area will often disclose the culprit or, better yet, confirm your original signal.
I don't have a White's and am not familiar with it, but, you do need more practice with your machine to become "fluent in its' language"......I know it is pretty new to you. Be sure to go through the manual and make sure you are setting it up properly, not being affected by EMI, etc. The big thing is don't give up......you will figure it out and be glad you did.

Re: Lost signals....
I have found that many times when I get close to the coin in ground the signal disappears. When I loose a signal I always scoop out another inch or so and am amazed at how many times a coin surfaces.

I'd be doing air tests and test garden tests like a son of a €|^%# to not only see if my MD'er had issues and to regain my trust and confidence in my machine.

Re: Lost signals....
Sometimes Breaking the Halo will end the signal.
if you still can't find it,
Recover the hole & walk away.
come back later.
Twice last year I had good signals,
but Couldn't hear them once breaking the ground.
not even with my Garrett Probe
both times I walked away,
and Hunting parteners late recoverd them.
One was a V the other a Buff Nickel.
so if you walk away, Either watch your Partner,
Or be willing to Forfeit
discriminate out Spike TV and American Diggers !
