A while back I had one crazy experience while metal detecting. I was thinking about it just now and it got me to wondering what crazy, funny or wierd things other detectorists have gone through.

Here is my story...

WHile metal detecting on my friends property I walked up a hill that led to his lake. As I got to the top of the hill the ground gave way and I fell into the ceiling of an 20 foot underground cave. I only fell in up to my waist. At first I thought I had fallen into a bog or mud pit but soon realized that my feet were dangling and I may go all the way through. I hastely got myself out of the hole which seemed like an eternity, and as I got up I saw just how deep the cave was so I started running like the wind before the whole shabang fell through. (((It Gets Better or should I say worse))) Right as I get to the bottom of the hill my leggs feel like they are moving on their own. I look down and what do I see. ANTS ALL OVER ME! At this very moment they decide to tear me a NEW ONE! They ate me uppp and I started running across the field screaming and stripping! I was SCREAMING in tongues along with a ton of swear words! I got down to my underwear and socks and found myself at the bend of the lake and just dove in. Ahhh much better for a few seconds. I finaly crawled out of the lake looking like swamp thing and was itching all OVER! My friend and his whole family saw the whole thing go down from their livingroom window and was just dieing laughing. I never saw those clothes again because his dogs ran off into a wooded area with them. (Thank god I dont take my phone or keys with me when detecting). Worst of all the detector I was using ended up in his lake, ALSO never to be seen again :help:

To top it off I had to ride all the way home in my underwear and socks. I got some crazy looks from the local rednecks that have monster truck tires on their vehicles. They were so high up that they could see down in my vehicle and saw me sitting there in my underwear. I will always bring an extra pair of clothes when I leave the house from now own!

Later on I found out that what I had fallen into was a MASSIVE underground ant bed/underground cave. I guess it had been there forever getting larger and larger.

Has anyone else had just a CRAZY CRAZY day. Please do tell :laughing7:

I don't think anything can beat that first story; glad I'm not you! Anyway just about 2 weeks ago the Pa Ghost Town Group was detecting at Bish Settlement and I went off to look for foundations and came about 6 inches from stepping on a porcupine. It was right next to my boot when I looked down. It then slowly went up a pine tree. You can see its picture at the Pa Ghost Town Group page.

I'm curious Jay...did you ever go back to checkout the cavern?

Tectin an old park in the woods, hard to get to, nobody around, very remote. Some guy sneaks up behind me and yells HEAH! at the top of his lungs ten feet behind me. Scared the crap out of me. He was another tecter dude. He is an old timer, some of the best. I tracked him down a couple years later, snuck up behind him in the same old grounds and yelled HEAHHHH! ten feet behind him. He soiled himself. He got an 1850O half dime that day.

Just got into detecting and was headed down a well used path in the woods swinging here and there NOT using headphones, focusing mostly on the ground when I looked up and found myself 30ft from a couple in the middle of the path blocking me, that would have been ok EXCEPT this male/female couple were totally naked and engaged so much with each other didn't even notice me and my beeping box...well what to do, I wanted to keep on going but didn't want to deal with their embarrassment so I turned back...only to find a wrist chain back on the path marked "ITALY 925", think it's gold....
Is metal detecting always porn and gold?....;-)

If I were you, I would go back and nuke (per see) the ants in the ant hill hole, then see what is down inside that hole! Considering the Natchez Trace runs through the property, it is hard telling what might have been buried in the hole. Hopefully the ants did not create the hill where a victim of the Natchez Trace robberies/murders is buried!

I was talking of buying a metal detector and just so happened a co worker loaned me her Tesoro Cibola. Also come to find out a friend of mine had had a whites GT coinmaster for quite some time and we decided to go metal detecting. He had found a spot on google earth, in a high crime area of course. He had been making fun of my loaner detector saying his was much higher end than mine, we debated some while detecting on the thought. While detecting about 4 young kids came over to see what we were doing, seemed like nice kids but a little thuggish. When they asked if they detectors cost much i winked at what seemed to be the kid in charge and said YEAH, my friends detector is a high priced one. The kids went over to harass him for a bit and i thought he was going to soil himself lol. He still won't let me live it down, but before we left shortly after (since he didn't feel safe anymore), i found my first gold ring and when sold i split the money with the friend =)

First story is just too good. A buddy and I are out scouting potential land, old old farm with huge fields and ponds. Place has been hunted on for deer, turkey etc plus the ponds fished from for well over a hundred years. Thinking this is going to be a great spot we drove ATVs up to the field, hopped off and continued on foot. We thought we heard someone talking and as we came to the top of a hill on the other side was a watermelon patch and someone was in the patch. It was a local mentally challenged guy named Tom who was known for lets just say having relations with the local livestock and had to be chased off often. We stop to see what he's doing, we notices he has his pants around his ankles, kneeling down, he took out a knife and cut a hole in a watermelon and umm began to do his thing. Kevin and I fell to the ground laughing which got Tom's attention who then stood up naked as a jay bird and yelled"don't tell guys, don't tell". We could hardly get back to the ATVs from laughter. I went back to the farmer and told him what Tom was doing to his melons, he busted a gut but was mad too as you can understand. Tom has been relocated to am adult center now and I hope they don't serve melon there or the entertainment will begin anew.

I was in Byrd Park in 2003 in Richmond, VA during the Beltway Sniper incident before they caught them detecting after class. It was a beautiful day, and all of a sudden I just got...that feeling I was being watched. There was a family having a picnic and the father was standing up and looking at me. We both walked over to each other and we were both like, what are you feeling? He said exactly what I was feeling, like there was something really strange with the atmosphere around us. We went back to out duties and I tried to put it up to the usual paranoia, but it turns out the sniper guys had in fact been in the park that day, time unknown. I was also detecting in Poland years later outside of a small village in a field, got "the feeling" again, turns out there was a concentration camp there in WW2 the locals told me about later. Trust your feelings!

I was water detecting by a bridge/local swimming hole with my Tiger Shark a few weeks ago. Tons of tubers and canoes take out at this bridge. It was around 7:30 pm as I usually go near the end of the day when most people are gone. There were a few tubers still taking out and a couple of girls swimming about 20 feet from me. I had my headphones on so they must have thought I could not hear them. I heard one of the girls say "girl time" and payed no attention. When I eventually looked over they meant what they said and were going at it. They saw me look and said we don't mind if you watch. I went about my business and kept detecting all the time hearing them talk about pleasing each other. Next week I go to a county park with a beach on a week night evening. Nobody there. I am detecting the grass just short of the beach. Down walks a couple about early forties with a hot big chested young blond. The blond starts posing for pictures while the older couple are taking shots. Next thing I know off comes the top and the photographing continues. After about five minutes they leave. They just ignored me and went about their business. I really love metal detecting!!

The best i can come up with is a good friend and detecting partner and I go to Tenn. Stop at Burning Bush Babtist church, Knock on the door And I ask the lady if we can detect out behind the church where they are doind a little construction, She says yes and tells us that the old Burning Bush School was across the street where the Ball field now sits and we let her know that if it's ok we may walk over that way and detect for alittle while, She is fine with all of this,So away we go to the back of the church I found a token right off the start of things and maybe 10 minutes into the hunt a fellow walks up asks what were doing ? I go through the whole story, HE Says that the lady said NO, and that I told her we were going to detect anyway, And that the Law has been called and will be here any minute. So back to the door we all three go the lady comes to the door and I tell her what the man said , and repeated her and my conversation ,SHE DENIES everything, and says she told us no, the Lady deputy shows up about this time, I repeat my side to her, Thinking that my partner and myself are headed to the pokey....But she just said that they did'nt want us there and we should go....Which we did pronto. So anyone Around Chickamauga and the Burning Bush Babtist Church, Take a tape recorder with you!

Yup gotta watch them old people. They forget really quick!
