Another, "Which MD should i buy?" thread...and sad news

Been out of the hobby for 6 years. My MXT had been stored in my basement, which got water in it. Long story short, sent it to a Whites repair center and they say its toast.

Sad.

Id still like to get back into it, but not sure it will be worth spending another $700+ to replace it, when im not even sure i will find/or get access to any spots im researching here in NC (my former detecting life was in MS, where i had more knowledge) .

That being said, i wanted opinions on possible less expensive replacement detectors that i might be able to get. I know, there isnt a great detector for everything, but im 95% interested in relic hunting, and never took my MXT out of relic mode but for a few times. I did find a nice, almost mint 1840o dime, hunting an old church yard which was great, but my focus is mainly WBTS relics.

Is there an affordable bad A** relic specialist out there?

Sorry to hear about your detector. If you are looking to get a decent detector for a reasonable price keep checking the classifieds on T net. I have bought a number of used detectors and they have all been in great condition. Used will get you several hundred dollars off the new price. A few that are in the $500 used are the F70, Cortes or Deleon, XLT or Xterra

There is a live post where the author found an sapphire when his chicken scratched it out. Ruth then wanted to know why I just paid 640$ for a new detector. Well it was a Tesoro Tigershark and would survive water to a depth of 200 feet. So Look into Tesoro or just get a chicken.

buy used!!!!! fisher 1265, 1266, cz, minelab sov, tesoro..............lots to consider about 400.00-500.00 will get you a great used machine!!!!!! even newer models are being sold cheap used!

fisher f75 or teknetics t2 with the boost process!!!! maybe even a teknetics g2. do some research and let us know what you get.

The tigershark is absolutely the best all round detector. You probably won't find a used one no body wants to part with it. . The 3.5 turn pot will handle all soil conditions. It is great in trash and you don't dig nails unless you want to. you can leave it in the basement. The console is waterproof and nearly bulletproof. Will find small gold and nuggets. Take it to the beach or in the lake. Will find relics in all metal or discriminating mode. A little more money but a lot more machine. No more chicken jokes. It is the real deal.

Tigershark is not the top performing Tesoro and now has the added drawback of hardwired coils which will really cost you as you work different sites. Bit on the heavy side to. Land performance is about that of the Silver. Going secondhand will get you a good detector for reasonable money but I would stick to newer models that are still repairable. Its just a case of trying a few to see what suits your detecting style.

I did probably overstate my preference for a tigershark. Tesoro land detectors with larger coils go deeper, the sandshark strictly for ocean beaches is better there. The lobo would do better for nuggets. However the all around capabilities are excellent and if you are unsure where you are going with the hobby then it would give you more options to explore. The 10 inch coil would probably be best for relics while the 8 inch is great for small items and in trash. The console mounted under the elbow counterbalances the coil or put it on your belt. It is not delicate, a real plus if you use it.

Personally I'd stick with the MXT, Or The AT Pro, I have both and love both of them..JMHO
