This is a request, or maybe a plea from a veteran detectorist. I went to the local park today and found some dried out plugs. There hasn't been any rain here in a while and the ground is very dry. When you're digging in these dry conditions be sure to do a few things: 1) don't dig shallow unless you're using a pinpointer and just pop an item out. 2) Always be sure to leave roots attached - dig a horseshoe, not a circle. 3) For shallow targets, keep holes small. If it appears deeper, dig a plug that has a lot of dirt attached to save the roots.
I love my hobby and the freedom to detect in public places. Before you get started, do some practice digs in an inconspicuous place and then check on it in a few days to see how it's doing. If it's dead, practice some more. It takes time but you'll get it and have perfect plugs every time. You'll be happy, people who see you detecting will be OK with it and you may even get invited to detect somewhere.
