Laws on investigating Roman Sites

Could somebody tell me if there any laws in the UK preventing me from investigating a known Roman camp site? i thought it would be a protected site but ive been told it isnt. Also i have found out today that in the woods near my grandads farm there is a old lodge that was used by the forestry when they where working in the area. It was demolished a few years ago but the footing etc.
