Did a local park the gate is always locked but today it was open and found 1954 dime and a silver bracelet. Not bad for a hour. I knew this was a good park.

Before you guys hit these baseball and soccer fields do you get permission from the city? I am only asking because where I live there are three older separate fields but I don't know if I should call and ask permission or what? Also would I be calling city hall or who usually grants that permission? I sort of know the chief of police, he isn't a friend or anything but I know who he is and would he be someone to contact for permission? Thanks for any help

If there's no signs sayin no metal detectors go after it, I've hit many ball fields in my area

I agree with D-holland: Unless there is something on the books saying "no detecting", then why should you think of yourself any different than someone going to fly frisbees in the park? (eg.: would you "ask permission" to fly frisbees?). You could go asking all sorts of desk-bound city folk if you want, but you might find a "no", simply because you asked, and simply because of someone's whims, when in fact, no one might ever have cared (unless you are being a total nuisance or eyesore or something). There's too many stories of cities and parks where no one ever had a problem. But lo & behold someone takes it upon themselves to walk into city hall and "ask permission". Their "pressing question" gets passed back and forth between multiple desks, and finally a "no" emerges. Then the old-timers are left scratching their heads saying to themselves "since when??" See how that psychology works? You can get a case of "no one cared, till you asked". So look it up for yourself, don't go asking someone's feelings or personal whims or moods or to find someone to morph something un-related (harming earthworms, etc...).

Now of course our hobby has connotations and draws lookie-lou busy-bodies, so a little "discretion" is in order. Ie.: just because there may not be any rules on the muni-codes there about detecting, doesn't mean that you can or should go at high noon waltzing over people's beach blankets. Go at off-times/low traffic times of day (dusk, or early morning, or whatever). If you see them tending the lawn or whatever at that particular park, then choose another park at that time, and so forth.

Hey thanks for the tip. I will probably just hit up these places during slow times and be discrete. Say I wanted to check more into the laws for our city though, without asking anyone of course.. Where would these be? I live in a small town so I doubt they have anything online..

Jamin others here will have better advice than me I'm sure, since I am still a newbie of sort. But I played baseball in highschool and people bring their lawn chairs and sit all around the fence to watch the game. I would think anywhere along the fence around the diamond would have potential.

You are likely safe in assuming that your small town has not placed restrictions concerning metal detecting. Ask the town secretary for the book of ordinances. Cover story if you need one is that you want to look at rules and regs covering use of parks for a possible family reunion. Whatever. Mention of your desire to metal detect need not come up.
