depends on the size of the gold item. Teensy dainty thin gold rings will read down at foil, while big beefy men's bands (and things like men's college class rings, etc...) can read up as high as zinc. Heck, a $20 gold will read up at copper penny-ish!

So as you can see, there's no one exact TID reading of "gold". Think of it like you would think of aluminum: a single snippet of an aluminum can (or the tab portion, etc...) reads low, like tab, right? But what does an entire aluminum can read at? Penny to quarter (depending on how close you hold it to the coil, etc..). BUT WAIT: the composition in question (aluminum in this case) never changed, right? So what changed then? The size of the object. So you see, size plays into it.
