Well my package came yesterday. Was able to play with it for a little while. I will say this "yee haw" the pro pointer is great! The digger also is awesome! I see why now all the people promote these two items so much. Was able to pull yet another wheatie out of the yard, clad quarter, and a dime. Not sure as to what that puts the total to but this thing is great. Thanks to everyone who comment

So, now that you have both the harbor freight and the Garrett Pro, what differences can you see? I am in the same situation you are in. Have only the HF one for now, wondering if I should upgrade. Thanks!

Well to be honest with you I found a ton of stuff with the HF. The only problem I found was it's accuracy. It just wasn't real good at pin pointing. The Garrett however beeps when close and goes nuts when you actually touch the item. I for sure recommended the Garrett. I plan on keeping the HF though as a backup.

I've had my propointer for over 3 years now still works great. My father bought a HF and used it for about a year and his broke. ( the old wire for the push botton can unsoldered). I let him use my propointer and I was scared I wouldn't get it back.LOL.Now he has a new propointer.

Nothing surprising here but let me repeat the ProPointer is not waterproof.

Had it in a guitar bag while fording a creek that was deeper than expected and the part of the bag it was in went underwater.

I removed the battery and shook the water out, let it dry in the sun for several days, and just tested it out with a new battery. It comes on and works for a couple seconds but then starts feeding out and going crazy. Let my mistake guide you.

OK so been detecting for a very short while. I currently have just a small hand held that came from harbor freight that I use to pin point with. I was wondering if the Garrett pro pointer is worth the money or not? Any advice would be much appreciated thanks.

I just bought a garret propointer I got it in the mail today from Amazon.com. I was previously using the cheap bounty hunter pinpointer, which was ok if you have a small budget. Well anyway I took my new Garret Propointer out for about an hour I instantly fell in love with the thing. It was cutting my recovery time in half and smaller holes for the shallow coins. I think it is as important as the detector. I'm so excited on how good it works I'm getting up a dawn to go detecting before work tomorrow.

I'd suggest keeping a 1-gallon ziplock bag in your gear just in case you think it might get overly wet. It works fine in the bag, and had I kept mine in it while crossing that creek it would have saved it. Gonna call Garrett and see what they say about repairing it.

I don't have one, yet. I use the bounty hunter one and like it other than it randomly starts buzzing any time you bump the damn button. I prefer buzzing over noisy ones. I bought a harbor freight and tore it apart replacing the speaker with an old cellphone buzzer(very easy mod) I dont like how big the HF is, too bulky.

It seem like the Garrett tip "girth" is too large compared to the other detectors, why would they make it so big? this is what somewhat runs me away from it as well as the price. I may try to find someone that has one to try before i drop $125 on one..

Pro Tip, for waterproofing any electronic device, used by navy seals even:
put it inside of a CONDOM and tie the top, you can still use the item as normal(although you may look a bit goofy) but it definitely works, even with cellphones. The dollar stores have condoms, so they are cheap as well.

Dustyallen, Here's the straight scoop minus the hype. Your Harbor Freight cost you about $18, the Pro cost about $160.
Now get this! THEY BOTH PICK UP A DIME AT ABOUT 1". The Pro has a neater case, but is harder to fix.

I have no doubt the GPP is worth the price but for now I picked up the HF Gen-Tech pinpointer for $14.50 after a 20% off coupon. I got it out this morning. Wow it's so much easier to pick out the coins. 14 pennies, 5 nails and 1/2 a toy car in just over an hour in my yard. My yard that I've MDed a bunch. The best thing about today - I never dug without finding the signal's source. And a couple of times I didn't even have to dig because a quick check with the pinpointer found it at or below the surface. I wish I picked it up a couple of weeks ago.

The switch is definately poor quality. I'll put on a better toggle switch and a vibration motor on soon. I saw instructions here: Treasurebone: Cen-Tech Hand Held Metal Detector Mod

Ok, I had the HF one for a while and the switch kept messing up and it was OK but not great. Just bought the Garrett a few days ago and have used it every day since I got it. The Garrett seems considerably better. Besides being obviously more well made, it just works better. I tried both in the same holes for a bit when I first got it, and the Garrett is more accurate, picks up stuff at a better range, and does a much better job of letting you know when you are getting close to your target. It has made a huge difference to me. I am glad I bought it and am keeping the HF one for an emergency backup. The HF one also does a poor job of locating shallow targets. The Garrett will point out stuff at the 1-2" deep range and sometimes deeper so that I know exactly where to dig.

buy it, you will never regret purchasing a ProPointer, they are fantastic. If the beeping bugs you just put your finger over the speaker slot, that is all I do if people are close.

Not meant to be a thread hi-jack here but ,How does the Garrett ProPointer line up against the Detector Pro Pistol Probe? Any advantage with one over the other?

The pro pointer is a must have in my book. Grant it there are others but the size and the construction of the pro pointer is second to none. Have found many items a couple of inches down with just it alone. I would tell anyone that owns a detector to get Ya one!

Thanks dusty,I had never really needed a pin pointer until i got the Omega 8000,The delta and the F4 worked well enough for pinpointing but this omega will have you chasing down a piece of chicken wire at 8 inches.Guess i need to start saving for a pinpointer. Thanks for your input.
