Welcome to Tnet. The XLT better than the 5500 IMO. Assuming they both work properly, the XLT will get more depth, better target I.D, and is more versatile in other forms of hunting.

I hunted with one for many years. Had about a 10 year period I did little to no hunting but bought it new in early 90's. Sold it a few months ago. Good machine. Tons of ways to tweak and customize it to your liking or turn on and go. Hope you enjoy it.:icon_thumleft:

Momzy....as bad as I hate to admit it, never really even tried. You can print a manual off Whites website. Funny because now I hunt in all metal quite a bit if it is not too trashy.:laughing7:

Is there any trick to making a good all metal program for it?

The Relic/Prospecting mode is pretty much all metal except for real low negative numbers.

Everyone has their own opinion,as well it should be. I have and do own a Whites Eagle Spectrum.(92/93 Have dug some 28000 coins and a mirid of goodies with it. Get a manual(PDF). If the machine is operating properly. When you use it ,"Trust it"- the what-if,s & maybe this or that will drive you nuts & discourage you. Every detector has it,s own language, listen, do what it says. you can learn to enjoy every minute of it.
It,s an oldie but goodie. PEACE JOY & PROSPERITY

Thanks for the help! I have been trying to learn what to dig and what to skip. I pretty much dig it all still because I haven't gotten it down yet. Mostly nails, bottle caps, shotgun shells, and stuff. I did find an old Indian head though. Love detecting!

here's a few settings you'd want for a "good all metal program" on that: Be sure you have vco "on", and ratchet pinpointing "off".

I am on My 2nd XLT. Lost the first in a fire. I thought the Eagle was the detector that came out just before the XLT. The electronics are almost the same, but the Eagle had a vertical display and the XLT has a horizontal display. I have pulled large targets from better than 2'. Frank

Hello frankn, first there was the original Eagle with the vertical display, then the Eagle Spectrum with horizontal display, then the XLT was the next model.

Gps53, Thanks I didn't know about the Eagle Spectrum. By the way there are 3 versions of the XLT. Frank

Do they have updates for the detector? My screen is horizontal.

Go on line to Whites. They have a small manual that lists ALL of the adjustments and tell what they do. You can do anything with an XLT. Frank
