Remember to turn off all discrimination or you may not pick up iron/steel targets. The only time I've found steel cents is in a pocket spill with other coins.

They only made them one year (except for a few 1944's that are worth a ton!) but they made over a billion of them so they're not particularly rare. You can get a nice circulated one at any coin shop for under a buck or an uncirculated one for under $5.

The rare thing about the copper/steel thing is that there are some copper pennies that were stamped with the steel die date and some steel pennies that were stamped with the copper die date. This occurred at changeover time. There were only a few like this so they are worth a lot. Frank

Shooter, in 1943 , the year of the Zink-Coated Steel, a few copper and a few silver planchets were struck in error and are known to exist. At the beginning of the 1944 run, a few steel coins were struck . Frank
